Quenching Unit

Susquehanna-Western, Inc. Uses Spiral Classifier For Quenching Unit

A 36″ x 19′-10″ Spiral Classifier is used for quenching an 800°F calcine at the Karnes County, Texas, uranium mill of Susquehanna-Western, Inc.

The coarse —1½” x 0″ hot calcine is fed directly to the Spiral Classifier at the rate of 12.5 tons per hour. The classifier is inclined only slightly so that there is no calcine in the overflow and all the quenched material is discharged on the sand end. A Classifier with full flared tank, a specially designed submerged bearing, and a single pitch spiral with 125% submergence was selected for this unusual application.

An exhaust hood is provided over the classifier for condensate removal.
Specifications on Spiral Classifier sizes to the 120″ diameter spiral appear in Bulletin No. C5C-B7 which will be sent on request.
